The committee sets the academic standards of the press, advises on new journals and book series, and arbitrates when an editorial decision is contested.
Members are appointed for a renewable term of three years, on the recommendation of the editors and with the agreement of the press. The committee meets twice a year and works by correspondence in between.
Committee members do not decide what individual journals publish. They set the standard those decisions are held to, review it annually, and hear appeals that an editor and an editor-in-chief have not been able to settle.
